Dr. Vincent Ozuru, who is an Expert in Quarantine Agriculture has advised Farmers in Nigeria to pay more attention to the production of plant produce that is in demand around the world.
He mentioned that a Plant like the Hibiscus, commonly known as Zobo is in high demand internationally.
Our who gave quality advice while speaking at Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa to aviation correspondents, pointed that some plant products, such as hibiscus, had brought huge revenue through export to the Federal Government.
He explained, that Nigeria exported about 1,983 containers of the hibiscus plant to Mexico alone in 2017 and made a profit of $35 million within nine months of that year.
The expert explained that the export of the Plant faced a setback due to the consequence of storage pests that we’re discovered in some consignments by the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service.
He said, that the problem has been solved and the export will resume again, he added that all matters with the stakeholders across the value chain have been resolved.
“Mexico is known to be the largest importer of Hibiscus from Nigeria, and our farmers should wake up to the challenge.
” The good news is that Nigeria has a very good Soil for the growth of Hibiscus, in which the harvest runs all through the year.
He said that farmers need to take advantage of the opportunity to earn foreign exchange for themselves and the Nation at large, even with the devotedness of the present administration to diversify the nation’s economy.
Ozuru called on the Farmers in Nigeria to show more committee to the production of export produce and also make efforts to get ready information on it to increase their income.
